"Take all the time you need," this is a common comment Cam Models hear who’ve fallen ill, face injury or crisis within their lives. There’s no denying that it’s a sweet remark from those who care about Cam Models but there’s a catch to this that I believe people aren’t considering.
Would you say this to any other person outside of the adult industry? Would you tell a nurse, sales associate, IT manager, or any other person (in another field) to take all the time they need off work? My assumption is that you wouldn’t because of a number of factors.
Perhaps it’s that people see those professions as exactly that, serious professions. Sadly, the impression I get from many people is that my profession as a Cam Model is not a “serious” career but just something that I do for fun.
I’m passionate about it, like many other Cam Models, it is full of fun adventures, exploration, opportunity but people should remember it is my primary source of income (like other full time Cam Models). I’m constantly brainstorming to create new ideas to keep people excited and to bring something new to the table. This is my career, my baby, that I’ve been building for over 4 years and hope to continue for many years to come.
So, people may tell Cam Models to take time off because they don’t see it as a legitimate profession. Another idea that’s bouncing around in my noggin (head) is that people have a hard time relating to a job that isn’t 9-5. Sure, we set our own hours but many Cam Models stick to a schedule, work full time (including offline work hours that you might not witness) and have spreadsheets following their daily, weekly and monthly goals.
We don’t get paid sick leave, like many other professions, but are very fortunate to those amazing people who are generous enough to offline tip us while we’re sick. This varies from model to model. Some might get a lot of offline tips while others receive zero. Personally, I don’t expect people to tip me if they’re not getting something in return but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t additional pressure laid upon me when I’m forced to take sick/injury/crisis leave. I’m certain every Cam Model feels that pressure.
Which brings me back to square one, "Take all the time you need." It’s truly a sweet sentiment. I get where you’re coming from but the truth is that Cam Models need to pay their bills just like you and every other person trying to make a living. So, we can’t take all the time we need for our health and taking that time off isn’t always good for our mental health. I can only speak for myself but an extended amount of time away from my friends on MyFreeCams leads me to become quite sad. My life is pretty dang boring without my Penguin Army!
Which leads me/us (cam models) to log online sick, injured or in a mental state that’s not suitable to make others happy. We want to make you happy. We want to know, even during hard times, that we’re entertaining you or making a difference in your life. Sometimes injury, like in my case currently, allows us to be online but we’re not able to do shows that you normally would like to see. This puts us in a pickle because it’s incredibly difficult to make financial goals when we’re unable to perform or do what normally attracts people to us.
Please, consider what you’re truly saying when you tell models to take a lot of time off work. We know you mean well but it’s not always an option because landlords don’t say, "Oh hey… you’re sick? Ahhh, don’t worry about this month’s rent! Take all the time you need." **giggle** You might say to buck up and just get online but hey! We do that! We also hope that you will appreciate our effort and continue to support us (like my Penguin Army does for me) when we aren’t feeling 100%.
